Rome is one of the top tourist destinations in Europe. It is the home of the Catholic Church and also of various astounding monuments and art pieces. Aside from these, Rome also has many to offer. It boasts of delicious local food, wine tasting, markets and others. These are just the many reasons why Rome is a place worth spending an amazing weekend.

Dine in Rome

In some guidebooks, an Italian meal is considered inexpensive if it costs under 30 dollars. However, there are still ways that you can enjoy your weekend in Rome in a budget. You can save a lot of money if you buy some of your food in the grocery stores such as cheese, bread and ready-to-eat meats such as salami. There are also restaurants that offer a meal with drinks costing 9 dollars.

You can also save a lot of money if you buy your food from street vendors because they cost less than sitting down in restaurants or café. You can also buy a slice of pizza for a quick dinner. Rome offers one of the most delicious pizzas; so don’t be afraid to be adventurous.

You can also try the Italian ice cream called gelato, which comes in various flavours. You can check online or even ask a local person to tell you the most delicious gelato in Rome.  It is better to stay away from eateries near the popular tourist areas because it is guaranteed more expensive there.

Don’t Miss a Wine Tasting Experience

For an amazing weekend in Rome, you must also try wine tasting. The famous white sparkling wine called Prosecco is non-alcoholic but has a lively color, good smell and fruity and flowery taste.  There are special shops in Rome that offers this wine together with some cheese and sliced meats such as the Cantina del Vecchio, a charming wine bar located on the Via dei Coronari.

Places to Visit for the Weekend

Of course, you should not miss a tour of the Vatican. It is recommended that you tour the Vatican in the early morning to avoid huge crowds of people. You can at least explore the Vatican and its museums for three hours including the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Square where the largest church in the world is located. After touring Rome for its theological history, you can start exploring the ancient Rome such as the Pantheon, Coliseum, Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill.

Once you have explored the tourist spots in Rome, you can also explore the interesting markets of Rome. Porta Portese is open even on Sundays at 5 AM and closes at 2 PM. In this market, you can buy almost everything. Another famous market is Mercato di via Sannio where they sell clothes, new or second-hand. There is also the Piazza Verdi if you are interested to buy or see antiques. These markets are crowded and so you must ready yourself to be in the middle of so many local people and tourists.

Visiting the usual places, and other alternative and not so famous places can add excitement to your weekend in Rome. A combination of both and a sense of the food and the wine shall make you vacation an event to remember.
