The catacombs of Rome will give you an overview of Roman and European history.  These catacombs are not only sanctified religious places; they also reflect a particular part in the development of Roman societies.

Catacombe di San Sebastiano

This is the most venerable and holiest catacomb you can visit in Rome.  In this catacomb, the remains of Saint Sebastian rest.  Through a guided tour, you will be able to see the resting places of the venerated Christian martyrs as well as enjoy the cool and serene underground atmosphere.

Catacombe di Priscilla

When you visit this catacomb, you cannot help but feel the antiquity of the place.  This is one of the oldest catacombs of Rome and two other catacombs converge with it.

It will take you along time to explore the vastness of Catacombe di Priscilla.  You will enjoy the magnificence of its underground cravings and stone works.  Be very sure though to have a guide with you.  Because this catacomb is so vast, you might get lost along its ancient corridors and passage ways.

Catacombe di San Callisto

Visiting the catacomb of St. Callixtus will take to a marvelous labyrinth of lavish and ancient tombs.  This is probably the most elaborate and the largest catacomb you can visit.

It has arched pillars and when you set foot in its vast hypogea, you will be taken back in time during the persecution of the Christians in Rome.  Some of the minor catacombs here are still unexplored so it might be a good opportunity for you to discover the deep recesses of the Callisto catacombs.

Catacombe di Domitilla oozes in antiquity.  You will feel the antiquity of this catacomb because of its aged wood works and antique brick stones.  This catacomb was owned by the Imperial Flavian family.

You can also feel the greatness and importance of this catacomb because this is also one of the largest underground cemeteries in Rome.

Important Tips when Visiting Catacombs of Rome

1.  When you visit any catacomb in Rome, make sure to check the schedules set by different administrators.  Not all catacombs have similar opening time.  Some are also closed during Mondays or Sundays.  To be safe, check the schedules first before scheduling a tour.

2.  Always take the guided tour.  There are lots of tours going on inside the catacombs.  You can also choose the language of the tour.

3.  You cannot wander alone inside the catacombs.  You might not find your way out especially in very vast catacomb complex.
