Did you know that when the Italian Renaissance master Michelangelo first saw the Pantheon, he was thoroughly impressed and said its designs were of angelic proportions?

You can imagine then how the Pantheon made its impact on people.  So when in Rome, you must not forget to visit it and experience the sight that impressed Michelangelo.

Going to the Pantheon

You can find the Pantheon at the Piazza della Rotonda.  This is bustling place at the center of Rome’s historical district.  Across the street, you can marvel at the grandeur of this ancient structure standing mighty and proud.

At the entrance portico, you will be amazed by its 16 massive columns made in granite and elaborately designed by Roman artisans.  If you stand under the portico, you will get the feeling that you are entering a place that was indeed of heavenly designs.

The Pantheon was surprisingly well preserved and intact after almost 2000 years so you will be able to appreciate it fully.

Enter and Be Amazed

Upon entering the place, you will be welcomed by its massive circular domed rotunda.  This is the main section of the Pantheon.  You will feel that you are at the center of the universe as you stand inside its main vault.

The domed rotunda forms a perfect massive sphere illuminated by the dome’s oculus or circular opening.  This will give you a feeling that you are among the deities.  That’s because the natural illumination will engulf you like a golden shield.

You can also notice the fine print of ancient Greek artistry because the dome’s ceiling was hand-finished and refined by Greek artisans.  You can also enjoy the exemplary creativity applied by the Roman sculptors on the interior columns.

Learning the Roman Civilization

You will be able to learn a lot about Roman civilization by simply visiting the Pantheon.  You can marvel at the exquisite beauty of its sculpture, wood works, carvings, and hand engravings.

Several famous emperors, Italian kings, and the famous Italian painter Raphael were buried at the Pantheon.  You will be able to feel the sanctity of the place as this served as the resting place of known historical figures.

Best Time to Visit the Pantheon

The Pantheon is always available for you to visit for the entire week.  It opens from 8:30 am to 7:30 pm.  The place however would be close during holidays. But it is open on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day so you can attend mass or partake in the celebration during these special occasions.

It is best for you to visit the Pantheon during early mornings when visitors and tourists are fewer.  At night, you can marvel at the grand façade of the Pantheon.  It would be lit by powerful night lights highlighting the columns of the portico.

You can sit at its steps or enjoy the night in a nearby café while basking in the majesty provided by the Pantheon.

The Pantheon is a great engineering feat of the Romans.  You can marvel at this wonderful architecture and understand why the great Michelangelo turned misty eyed when he saw the Pantheon.
